LTE - Veterans Benefit Specialist

The purpose of the LTE Veterans Benefit Specialist is to provide information and advice to veterans, their family members, survivors, and dependents regarding benefits and resources eligibility and availability; and provide assistance in obtaining benefits and accessing benefits.


*This is a limited term position anticipated to last up to 28 weeks.
*40 hours a week.
*No benefits.

 

Essential Duties

 

  • Maintain knowledge of current benefit programs and requirements through training, seminars, and informational updates from providing agencies.

 

  • Inform clients regarding changes affecting entitlement to benefits.

 

  • Determine client State and Federal benefits eligibility based on service data, age, physical and financial conditions.

 

  • Advise clients of available benefits and assist in completing a variety of necessary benefit application forms.

 

  • Advise clients regarding proper procedures for benefits which have been denied, changed, terminated, etc.

 

  • Assist clients with proper procedures such as filing appeals and notices of disagreements.

 

  • Assist clients who have applied for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Supplemental Security Disability Income (SSDI) to determine their eligibility for Federal VA pension benefits and assist with the application process.

 

  • Post and disseminate timely and relevant information to the veteran community via multiple electronic avenues, to include the Sauk County website, Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail.

 

  • Intermediating on the veteran’s behalf with the VA to solve issues with development and promulgation of claims.
  • Greet all clients and answer phones in a friendly, professional manner.

 

  • Record client contact and activity.

 

  • Assist Veteran Service Officer (VSO) with Veterans Relief by issuing checks and vouchers, completes monthly reconciliation of Veterans Relief.

 

  • Act as Secretary of the Veteran’s Service Commission in the absence of the VSO.

 

  • Draft cover letters for transmittal documents to Veterans Service agencies.

 

  • Prepare quarterly newsletters by gathering information, writing copy, editing, and preparing for publication.

 

  • Assist in preparing VSO annual operating budget and annual report.

 

  • Assist in preparing grant applications and annual reports.

 

  • Perform Notary Public duties.

 

  • And other duties as assigned.
 

Required Working Hours

Standard working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. Please note these hours are subject to change and additional hours may be needed or required.  Compensation for additional hours beyond normal working hours are subject to applicable state and federal regulations.

 

Minimum Training and Education

 

Required:

High School diploma or equivalent certification

3 years administrative or office experience

Must be able to pass PIV FBI Background

 

Licenses/Certifications: 

Accredited by USDVA within 1 year of start

 

Preferred:

Associate’s degree in Business or another related field

 

Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
