BARABOO FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH TO HOST MUSIC OF THE HOLOCAUST
In observance of Holocaust Remembrance
Day on Thursday May 2, the First United Methodist Church, 615 Broadway in Baraboo, will
offer, Music, Remembrance, and Repairing Our World: Lessons on Yom Ha;Shoah, a free
public program at 6:30 p.m. about music of the Holocaust. The program will be presented by Dr.
Teryl Dobbs, a music professor and chair of music education at the University of Wisconsin-
Madison and a scholar and researcher affiliated with the Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish
Studies.
Dr. Dobbs will share stories of children who made music during the Holocaust in the
concentration camps and ghettos of Auschwitz, Theresienstadt, Bergen-Belsen and the Warsaw
Ghetto. This thoughtful multimedia presentation will provide historical context while covering
racism, antisemitism and other issues that continue to affect humanity to this day. The program is
designed for audiences age 13 and older.
During the 1½-hour program, activities for younger children will take place in the
church’s adjacent fellowship hall, including painting stones of remembrance, kindness, inclusion
and love that the children can then share throughout their community.
While the program is free of charge and open to the public, a freewill offering will be
taken to benefit HIAS, a Jewish American nonprofit that provides humanitarian aid and
assistance to refugees, and to the Tree of Life*Or L’Simcha Congregation in Pittsburgh.
Earlier in the day, Baraboo area residents will be encouraged to observe Holocaust
Remembrance Day by “planting” blue “Reject Hate/Unite in Love” yard signs that have been
distributed in the community since last December in response to the controversial photograph
that was posted on social media a month earlier.
